by Alex Vann

James Orotayo Some people write songs for a living and others share their lives through song. Alex Vann definitely fits into this second category. Like all good artists his songs live best when performed live and this album includes examples of this. The digital version also comes with artwork for each track, and provides extra depth to the lyrics he sings. Favorite track: Return to New Street.

I Will Be The Air Alex Vann June 2010 I know what I believe I believe what my eyes see I see the world is blind And it worries me But I will not be chained To a life that is not mine My mind will not be caged By the hands of time CHORUS When the rain comes pouring down I’ll lift you up to higher ground And keep you safe and dry beneath my wings I believe Talk to me, I’ll talk to you When the sun comes shining through Be my water and I will be the air That surrounds you And when the road is long And all my faith is gone I will stand and fight What I believe is wrong I hold my hands up high And fall down to my knees A bullet takes my cares away And I can’t breathe M8 I can see the light – can feel the might Of something stronger CHORUS (repeat) ..that surrounds you And all that you can see And all that you believe And everywhere you go And all that you can know Intrumental interlude : B B+F# B+A B+E CHORUS (repeat) Then overlapping vocal: Chorus lyric + ‘I will not be chained’ verse + I can see the light can feel the might… Then, ‘Talk to me’ chorus then, VERSE 1 repeat

Parallel Roads Across the valley of Glen Roy comes the pathway of the ancients Perfection in perspective - the etching of all time The ageless living sculpture before the great landslide A journey from the distance to the promised land To keep a constant distance From all we do not know We all move together But we’re traveling on Parallel Roads Between the inner fight for freedom and the primal scream of life There’s a chance of new beginnings in the land where lands collide From the safety of the borders to the shores of Lock Sheil I’m standing staring northwards to the promised land Ch (repeat) Inst Ch

RETURN TO NEW STREET No one ever looks up in this town - Am I the only one who can see The Angels and Gargoyles in this town - I’m sure that they’re staring at me I’ll hold my head as I walk through the crowds you’ll see my lips move as I shout out aloud: Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Let me hear you cry: Return to New Street The beggars the buskers the preachers - they all want a piece of my soul I try to ignore the Big Issue but deep down I know there for God’s grace I go The pigeons and statues watch the world going by and deep in this city did I hear someone cry: Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Let me hear you cry: Return to New Street Your briefcase, your suitcase your sad face your backpack is weighing you down But you have escaped from the Rat race at least till the next day comes ‘round. Your mobile phones and your laptop computers - the Walkman brigade a chorus line of commuters Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Let me hear you cry: Return to New Street BRIDGE This place never sleeps, no this place never sleeps darling - when you’re lying n your bed you’ve got the big dirty city in head Instrumental Pilgrims in Levis and trainers pay homage to McDonalds again as I stand alone at the station I leave the pigeons and the stations and gargoyles and angels and i’ll have to fly to make the next train in time but her clock’s always five minutes faster than mine Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Let me hear you cry: Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Let me hear you cry: Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Return to New Street Let me hear you cry: Return to New Street

Mrs. Cartwright’s Still Alive Alex Vann 55 years is how long they were together Eternity is how long they’ll be apart She was 17 when they married in ‘40 He was born in ‘22 He remembers Normandy, she remembers the sink He remembers cheap beer, she remembers cleaning up the stink Her father said it wouldn’t last Her mother only cried THe love died 20 years ago, but Mrs. Cartwright Mrs. Cartwright’s still alive It wasn’t always easy getting by with no money A pittence maketh man she would say He’d hit the bottle and she’d hide the bruises “Speak when you’re spoken to” he’d say She gave him children, and he broke her heart She longed for her freedom, he knew they’d never be apart Her father said it wouldn’t last, Her mother only cried The love died twenty years ago, but Mrs. Cartwright, Mrs. Cartwright’s still alive He’d smash her face and then beg for forgiveness She’d always do what was ‘right’ She was 21 going on 40, With a husband like that it’s no surprise He broke down in tears, she stroked his fair skin He spoke of ending it, but she never would give in Her father said it wouldn’t last Her mother only cried THe old boy died years ago, but Mrs. Cartwright, Mrs. Cartwright’s still alive 55 years is the age of her eldest Though they haven’t met in 53 The neighbours all say ‘What a shame she’s no family’ But the kids in the street call her “Gran”

Lost and Found I’m not a saint And I’m not afraid I’m just a man who’s lost his way I’m not a star And I’m not well-healed I’m just a man who’s trying to feel And everyone knows That inner knowledge grows Like a flower, growing stronger everyday I’m not a sage I just do what I can I’m not the man you think I am And everyone knows That inner knowledge grows Like a flower, growing stronger everyday I’m not a saint And I’m not afraid I’m just a man who’s found his way

My Loneliness Alex Vann 2001 (on piano) My loneliness, it surrounds me like and old friend My emptiness, it fills me, like the memory of a kiss What you gonna say, when the wind blows me away? What you gonna do when you get lost too? What you gonna say, when the wind blows me away? What you gonna do when you get lost too? Piano riff My thoughtlessness, astounds me like a raindrop in the wind My hopelessness deserts me like the memory of a dream What you gonna say, when the wind blows me away? What you gonna do when you get lost too? What you gonna say, when the wind blows me away? What you gonna do when you get lost too? Cornet /piano solo My loneliness, it deserts me My loneliness, it deserts me What you gonna say, when the wind blows me away? What you gonna do when you get lost too? What you gonna say, when the wind blows me away? What you gonna do when you get lost too, get lost too? Cornet /piano outro

Together 02:49
Together Alex Vann (first song written 1985 age 15) Try not to think of the past but of the good things that will happen to you And if you feel like a laugh think of all the laughs we used to have together – nothing can tear us apart Try not to think of time now But of the good things that have happened to you And if you want to laugh Just close your eyes and think of yesterday Together – we can make it again together When I think of all the bad times we had You know it really makes me quite sad To think that our love could have lived together Try not to think of time now But of the good things that will happen to you And if you want my advice Think of all the things we used to do Together – we can make it again Together When I think of all the good times we had You know it really makes me laugh To think that we could both be Together Try not to think of the past But of the good things that have happened to you And if you feel like a laugh Close up your eyes and think of yesterday Together – we can make it again Together, Together , together

Mary 04:44
MARY Alex Vann Mary is drawing again, her garden is so very dark She once danced in sunshine, an angel - but now Only silhouettes pirouette in her heart Mary is sleeping again - she can dream the big bad world away Her mind gives her freedom to drink from the well But her mind is a prison - she’s locked in a cell Mary is singing again a tune she knows no-one will know Her song gives her courage to help mend her heart, But the damage is so deep, She wouldn’t know where to start And Mary is crying again Her dreams take her back to the past And all the King’s horses and all the King’s men Couldn’t put Mary’s heart back together again SOLO And Mary is laughing again, the child with the smile in her eyes She smiles in the sunshine- she smiles in the rain She smiles when her dreams take her back there again And Mary is dancing again, her garden is so very dark And all the King’s horses and all the King’s men Couldn’t put Mary’s smile back together And all the King’s horses and all the King’s men Couldn’t put Mary’s mind back together And all the king’s horses and all the King’s men Couldn’t put Mary’s HEART back together again No, no, no, no, no (together again) no, no ,no ,no ,no ,no ,no (together again)
