THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG
Now, I’m not a religious person - at all. However, this particular song is based on a quote from the Bible: 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, verse 11 and in particular the King James version which reads: “When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” It was later re-quoted by C.S. Lewis in a somewhat different way: “When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

The idea is that when we are very young we can see the world in a simpler way – and it is very easy to make our pledges to other people. When we grow up things always seem to become more complicated – so those promises that we make to others, that once felt so solid and ever-lasting, become ever harder to keep. In this song I talk about that and I guess essentially it’s autobiographical.

Things like a broken down marriage or relationship can be difficult to reconcile - but ultimately it’s no one’s fault but the changing of people and situations over time.
